WHY THEN?
The line between makeup and skin care began to blur
when Cover Girl introduced Clean Makeup. Thisgood-for-you
liquid foundation was water-based, rather than oil-based,
with hydrating benefits thanks to a healthy dose of Noxzema
skin cream in the formula It marked a new paradigm
of makeup that did more than cover skin—it also treated it.
WHY TODAY?
The light, sheer, natural-finish line now comes in
oil-control, fragrance-free, and pressed-powder formulas, $5.

WHY THEN?
In the mid-6os, the Estee Lauder Company challenged
Carol Phillips, an editor at
Vogue,
and dermatologist Norman Orentreich
to dream up a skin care line that could “create” great skin. Clinique was
born—the first dermatologist-guided, fragrance-free, and allergy-tested
line of skin care, with a trademark 3-Step Skin Care System.
WHY TODAY?
The three steps (cleanse, clarify, and moisturize) are
now customizable. Try six variations of the Facial Soap, five different
Clarifying Lotions, and two consistencies of Dramatically Different
Moisturizer, from $45 for the set.

WHY THEN?
In 1958, Estee Lauder shocked consumers
with an ad placed in local newspapers that read, “What Makes
a Cream Worth $115? Come Find Out.” This marked the
birth of Re-Nutriv, perhaps the first luxury face cream. This
line has endured because it was the first to meld a rich,
moisture-intensive pampering cream with cutting-edge
anti-aging research.
WHY TODAY?
Re-Nutriv formulas (and sizes) still remain
popular—facial creams; hand, body, and eye creams;
serums; cleansers; even makeup; from $39.
-Loving Makeup
WHY THEN?
A barrel of fragrance labeled “ Love Oil”
discovered during a renovation of the original KiehPs
apothecary made a splash with both men and women when
introduced as “ Musk Oil.” It has since become one of the
most widely copied scents in the world and is the only
fragrance featured in Washington’s Smithsonian Institute.
WHY TODAY?
The popular scent endures, and is available
as an eau de toilette, body cleanser, and lotion, from $16.

WHY THEN?
Hair color became easier, more affordable, and
accessible with the launch of L’Oréal Preference, a do-it-yourself
permanent hair color kit with an audacious catchphrase,
“Because I’m Worth It.” The number of Preference shades has
grown from 14 to over 40, and its formula has undergone seven
upgrades since the launch.
WHY TODAY?
The latest upgrade, L’Oréal Superior
Preference, delivers vibrant tone-on-tone results, $10. tfS)
